UAE Tint Law

Do’s & Don’ts for Car Window Tinting in the UAE

Key Regulations

  • Maximum tint for private vehicle side and rear windows: up to 50% Visible
  • Light Transmission (VLT).
  • Front windshield must remain largely clear; only a narrow strip at the top (up to ~15 cm) is allowed in some cases.
  • Fine for non-compliance: AED 1,500 typical. In severe cases, vehicle impoundment with release fee up to AED 10,000.
  • Use approved non-reflective films; reflective or mirror tints are generally prohibited.

Do’s

  • Use a certified tint film that clearly states VLT rating.
  • Ensure side & rear windows meet the ≤ 50% VLT rule for private vehicles.
  • Leave the windshield virtually untinted (except minimal top strip if permitted).
  • Confirm the installer provides a compliance certificate or documentation.
  • Keep your vehicle registration and tint proof handy if stopped by authorities.
  • If you have a medical exemption, carry the official authorization.

Don’ts

  • Do not apply heavy tint below 50% light transmission for side/rear windows.
  • Do not tint the windshield beyond the allowed strip or without permit.
  • Do not use reflective/mirror film that interferes with visibility or signals.
  • Avoid DIY installations that lack certification or warranty—they may fail inspection.
  • Do not assume rules are identical across all Emirates—verify local regulations.
  • Don’t ignore compliance—fines, impoundments, and cancelled insurance claims are real risks.

Quick Reference Table

  • Window Location | Allowed Tint | Notes
  • Front windshield | Minimal to none | Clear view required
  • Front side windows | Up to ~50% VLT | For private vehicles
  • Rear side & rear window | Up to ~50% VLT | Private vehicles
  • Commercial/rental vehicles | Stricter limits (varies) | Check specific use case

What to Do if You’re Unsure

  • Ask for a VLT meter reading after installation.
  • Choose an installer listed on or recommended by the local transport authority (e.g., RTA Dubai).
  • Keep receipts and certification of the film used and its specifications.
  • Before modifying a rental or taxi vehicle, check with the fleet manager and insurer.
  • If caught with non-compliant tint, remove or replace it quickly to avoid repeated fines or registration issues.
